A sea anchor or drogue, sometimes referred to as, a drift anchor or drift sock, para ~anchor or boat brake is a simple device that helps to stabilize and slow a boat in heavy weather or when drifting without power.

There are times when tethering the boat to the sea bed with a conventional anchor is either impractical, due to extreme depth or loss of ground gear, or undesirable, whilst drift fishing or to steady a boat in heavy weather.

By deploying a drogue you can increase the boats drag thus slowing the boats movement through the water.
Attaching a drogue to the stern of a vessel will resist the boats tendency to broach, turn broadside on to the prevailing waves, and the potential of being flooded.

The smaller drogues are often employed by fishermen whilst fishing on the drift to slow the boats rate of drift, giving much more control to your direction and speed, keeping you over the feeding shoal for longer!
